Mini Max 🐒

Who remembers Mini Max from the 2021 baby season? After arriving in October at just 9 days old, with a broken leg, likely from a car accident, he became one of the more well known babies of the season.

Mini Max spent months in human care recovering from surgery, where a pin and plate were used to repair his leg. With daily physiotherapy and lots of support, he made an incredible recovery - you’d never know today that he ever had an injury!

Despite his long time in care, he formed a strong bond with his foster mum, Dolly, and the two remained close even after his release to the troop.

Now, after a big growth spurt, Mini Max is easy to spot thanks to his big ears! He’s thriving, loves papaya, and is steadily climbing the ranks within the Global Troop.

Are there any other recent orphans you’d love an update on? 💚 #southafrica #update #secondchance #april #monkey

Snow White 🐵

At 23 years old, Snow White is one of our oldest females on site and she’s still thriving in Holt & Barrington Troop.

Since joining the troop in 2019, she’s become a gentle and familiar presence, often spending time around the juveniles and babies. Whilst preparing Kieth Mann for his integration into troop, she entered into the IC and gave both him and foster mum Skylar a groom and a cuddle.

We love celebrating our newest arrivals and little ones, but it’s just as important to recognise our wonderful golden oldies like Snow White - who continue to play such a special role in the troop 💚 #goldenoldies #sanctuary #april #monkeys #trooplife

Salty 🌊

Salty arrived on the 21st of January, just a few hours after Griffin & Sal. Sadly, his mum had been hit by a car. Our newest YouTube focuses on their arrivals: https://youtu.be/Pih9rfRDQ9I?si=6Gvx4dCx0mnJi4kK

Wendell quickly helped fill the void left by his lost family, and before long the two boys were playing, chasing each other around, and building a strong bond.

At his initial health check, Salty’s faecal sample tested positive for strongyloids—a type of parasitic worm. Aside from this, he appeared generally healthy, though clearly struggling internally. He was treated with a dewormer and later went on to meet the mums alongside Wendell.

On the day of release, however, we noticed Salty had little appetite, so he was brought back in for assessment. Tests showed a mixed infection (though no strongyloids at that time). He received treatment and, once his appetite and energy levels improved, he was returned to the mums.

Three weeks later, Salty was brought back in again due to bloody stools. Testing confirmed the return of strongyloids, and he is currently undergoing another course of deworming treatment for these persistent parasites.

For now, Salty will remain in Sickbay for close observation and medication. With continued care, we’re hopeful he’ll be able to return to Millie or Mara soon. He’ll also receive another follow-up check next week.

Wishing Salty all the best 💙

Sanctuary life recently 🌧️

Daily care, critical patients, constant cleaning, feeding, maintenance and showing up, no matter the weather.

This year has brought heavy rains and significant flooding unlike anything we’ve seen here in a long time. We’ve witnessed firsthand how difficult these conditions can be for some of those in our care, especially the most vulnerable.

That’s why Dreamland matters so much. A dedicated special care unit, built from concrete for better temperature control and protection from damp and mould, something our wooden cabins can’t always provide.

If you’d like to support Dreamland, our donation link is https://www.paypal.com/donate?campaign_id=T89C84B4ZFKCU & in the bio 🌟. #southafrica #donate #monkey #rain #monkeys

🌍 Earth Day 🌿

Earth is home to all of us and every species depends on a safe place to live.

For many primates, that space is shrinking. Habitat loss is forcing wildlife and people into closer contact, often leading to human-wildlife conflict.

At the sanctuary, these impacts are the reality for many in our care - arriving as victims of shootings, snares, car accidents and more.

Today we can to reflect on the importance of protecting natural habitats and the wildlife that depend on them 🌍
