Release day is always one of our favourite moments for so many of the orphans that have been rehabilitated at the sanctuary. After everything they’ve been through, seeing them finally sleeping in the trees, playing with their new troop and getting to be wild again is the best feeling.

But release day isn’t the end of their integration.

For around a week after joining their new troop, our team, made up of staff, interns and volunteers, carry out sunrise to sunset integration shifts, monitoring the troop throughout the day to make sure the new members are settling in well.

We’re watching to see if they’re getting along with the troop, drinking milk from the feeding stations and finding their place amongst their new family.

Integration shifts aren’t just about monitoring the new arrival though.

They give our team a really special opportunity to spend time observing the troops too. We can see new behaviours, changes in relationships and ranks, capture content for social media and, sometimes, spot potential foster mums for our next baby season.

Even after this initial integration period, which lasts around a week, our current season’s babies continue to be monitored daily until the next seasons orphan arrive.
